Ostriches are not easy to raise. When raising ostriches, you must pay attention to various factors such as the growth period of the ostrich, the density of the breeding, the selection of breeding ostriches, the size of the house and the ground, etc.
1. During the growing period, a small group of 3 is generally composed of 1 male and 2 females, with a small group per 800 square meters. During the non-growing period, they are combined into a group of 20-100 animals for control. Australian ostriches and American ostriches form a small group of 5-7 individuals, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:4-6.
2. Feeding density. 20-30 square meters per bird in the African ostrich house, 200 square meters per bird in the dredge; 10 square meters per bird in the Australian ostrich (emu) or American ostrich house, and 50-60 square meters per bird in the dredge.
3. Pay attention to the use of breeding ostriches. The male African ostrich has a tall body, black body feathers, white tail feathers and wing feathers. When defecating, the penis extends out of the cloaca and bends to the left. The penis is not less than 25 cm long. The penis extends from extended to retracted. The isolation time should be slightly longer, the plumage color should be bright and bright, the beak and shins should be orange-red, and the sexual desire should be strong. During mating, there should be movements such as spreading wings, shaking head and neck, shouting, and dancing; the female ostrich should show strong maternal nature, For example, it has strong egg-protecting and chick-protecting properties. The feathers all over the body are gray, the shins and beak are not orange, but light blue-gray. The estrus should be obvious, that is, it is willing to accept male ostriches for breeding, and the distance between the two feet and the pubic bone should be wide.
4. The ground inside the house and dredging yard should be paved with sand. It is required to be consistent with the breeding period. It is best to use yellow, clean river sand with a thickness of 8-20 cm.
5. Try to keep the environment safe and dry without moisture. The relative humidity is about 60%. As for cleaning, disinfection, removal of iron nails, glass and other debris, as well as the establishment of greening and drainage systems, All are consistent with the breeding period.
6. Observe the movements of the ostrich group and do a good job in all filing tasks, such as feed intake, drinking water status, mental movements, feather color, whether the ostrich’s head and neck is hanging down or lifted up, etc. must be carefully observed, or made some records. Failure to lift the head and neck is a sign of serious disease. If the feces is lumpy, it is normal; if it is hard or rotten, it is very serious and should be broken down. Attention should also be paid to the occurrence of trauma in individual ostriches. The sex and mating status of male and female ostriches should also be examined one by one.
7. Moult. Generally from mid-October to late January of the following year, ostriches enter the moulting stage. The process of moulting is: front of shoulder blades and chest → buttocks → waist → wing feathers → tail feathers.
If you want to raise ostriches, you must handle them carefully.
